Research
Joshua Staubs works across aeroacoustics, unsteady flow phenomena, and aerodynamic performance—connecting fundamental flow physics with practical aerospace applications.
Research themes
Aeroacoustics
Airfoil noise and sound radiation in turbulent flows.
Unsteady flows
Unsteady loading, tip-gap flow, and rotor–stator interaction.
Aerodynamic performance
Low-subsonic grid-fin performance and flight applications.
Conceptual research illustrations; not experimental images or simulation results.
Drone acoustic localization
An ongoing project exploring passive detection and localization from the sound of drone motors and propellers. The project aims to develop a passive system that detects and localizes drones from their acoustic signature.
Proposed methods: The planned approach combines a microphone array, time- and direction-of-arrival estimation, and machine learning for sound classification and background-noise separation.
Current stage: The project will first test signal-processing and machine-learning methods on recorded audio, before moving to real-time detection and field testing.
