EIC Chula - Engineering Innovator club at RoboCup 2023

In the previous 8 - 12 July, team EIC_chula, a robot team from Engineering Innovator Club (EIC), had participated in Robocup@Home 2023 at Bordeaux, France and we obtained 14th place in the world in the RoboCup@Home Open League.
Since this is the first time competing abroad in a decade, we want to prioritize the ease of transporting our robot while maintaining its stability and structural integrity. To achieve this, we designed the robot to be easily split into multiple parts, added a suspension system, and introduced a novel lifting mechanism that improves strength and stability compared to last year's design. The electrical aspect of the robot has also undergone significant changes to enhance sensor detection range and response time.
As for the software side, our Natural Language Processing (NLP) has transitioned from to fully offline models. OpenAI Whisper has resulted in more accurate and faster speech-to-text compared to last year. For the Robot Operating System (ROS), we have created our own open-source package that stores and visualizes furniture data in the house as a 3D model. Moreover, we are working on an experimental grasping workflow for our robot arm.
The highlight this year is the development of a method for synthesizing datasets for keypoint detection using Blender. This method has proven to be much easier, faster, and more reliable compared to traditional methods during the competition. As a result, our team is aiming to submit a conference paper about this method in the near future.
The team has granted a lot of valuable experiences from this competition, which is certain to be useful for the junior members and for participating in the next competition. Even though we may not have received the victory this year, it was nonetheless a journey that was full of growth and accomplishment.

Three final-year students from the Information and Communication Engineering (ICE) program successfully presented their senior research project at the International Electrical Engineering Congress 2026.
Three final-year students from the Information and Communication Engineering (ICE) program at the International School of Engineering successfully presented their senior research project at the International Electrical Engineering Congress 2026, an international conference held in Pattaya and jointly organized with the IEEE Thailand Section. The congress brings together researchers, engineers, and industry professionals to share advances in electrical and digital technologies. The students—Parm Suksakul, Nathan Kittichaikoonkij, and Nakhin Polthai—presented their research titled “Understanding Human-in-the-Loop Governance in AI Application Development: Empirical Themes and an Analytic Three-Pillar Model.” The project is conducted under the supervision of Dr. Aung Pyae, a lecturer in the ICE program. The study examines how organizations maintain effective human oversight as artificial intelligence becomes more embedded in operational decision-making. Drawing on qualitative data from a diary study of a production customer-support chatbot and interviews with AI practitioners from academia and industry, the research identifies key patterns in how human roles, responsibilities, and collaboration with AI systems are structured throughout the development and deployment lifecycle. Based on these findings, the research proposes a three-pillar framework for operationalizing Human-in-the-Loop governance in real-world AI systems. The framework highlights three core elements—authority, traceability, and lifecycle gates—to support clear decision responsibility, transparent documentation, and structured checkpoints where human oversight is integrated into the AI lifecycle. Grounded in observations from an enterprise customer-support environment, the study offers practical insights for organizations seeking to deploy AI responsibly while maintaining human accountability. Presenting this work at iEECON 2026 represents an important academic milestone for the students and reflects the ICE program’s commitment to advancing research in responsible AI development and human-centered technology. The ISE Special Lecture on Robotics was honored to host Prof. Tomonari Furukawa as a distinguished guest speaker, presenting research findings from the VICTOR Laboratory on a broad range of topics.
On Tuesday, December 16, 2025, the ISE Special Lecture on Robotics was honored to host Prof. Tomonari Furukawa, Professor and Zinn Faculty Scholar at the University of Virginia, and Honorary Professor at Chulalongkorn University, as the distinguished guest speaker. Prof. Furukawa shared research findings from the VICTOR Laboratory covering a wide range of topics, including fully autonomous rescue robots, humanoid robots, aerial–ground robot collaboration, human front-following robots, state estimation under extreme acceleration, and his experiences leading teams in several renowned international competitions. These included Virginia Tech’s Team VALOR in the DARPA Robotics Challenge (2015) and Team VICTOR in the Mohamed Bin Zayed International Robotics Challenge (MBZIRC) in 2017 and 2020. The session was organized by Assoc. Prof. Ronnapee Chaichaowarat, Ph.D., at ISE Robotics Lab.

Congratulations to Mr. Kornlavit Lerdsudkanung, a Nano-Engineering graduate student, for his research work “Molecular Imprinted Polymer (MIP)-Based Optical Sensor for Sensitive Detection of Methamphetamine,” conducted under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Charusluk Viphavakit, Ph.D., in collaboration with the Department of Forensic Medicine, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. The work was accepted for an oral presentation and nominated for the Outstanding Oral Presentation Award at IEEE Sensors 2025, one of the most competitive international conferences in the sensing field. The conference was held in Vancouver, Canada, during 19–22 October 2025. In recognition of its quality, innovation, and significance, the work was nominated for the Outstanding Student Oral Presentation Award, highlighting a remarkable academic achievement at the international level.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ronnapee Chaichaowarat demonstrated his invention, the “Wheelchair-Exoskeleton Hybrid Robot,” to Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. He also served as the Exhibition Co-Chair, Invited Keynote Speaker, and Session Chair for Biomechanics in Assistive Technology. Several ISE members presented their research papers at the conference: Mr. Nadol Pipattikanan (Robotics AI #1) presented his paper, “Real-time EMG-based assistive torque control on a powered elbow exoskeleton for weight-lifting support.” Mr. Phurin Liwcharoensakkul (ADME #4) presented his paper, “Electromagnetic brake with rotating field coil and armature for torque modulation under varying speed and load.” Mr. Thapanon Noochan (PMUC Researcher) presented his paper, “Climbing exoskeleton assisting shoulder extension during pull-up.” Mr. Sethapong Ketjit (ME Alumni) and Mr. Thanaphat Wachirakamchai (PMUC Researcher) presented their paper, “Development of dual force plate for real-time monitoring of ground reaction force during bridging exercise for rehabilitation.” All papers were supervised by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ronnapee Chaichaowarat.

Prof. Ronnapee Chaichaowarat, Ph.D., head of ISE Robotics Lab, was invited by University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) and the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) to give a keynote speech, entitled “Affordable Assistive Robotics: Solutions for ASEAN Countries”, in China-Thailand Forum on Intelligent Rehabilitation Technology and Industrial Development & Inauguration Ceremony of USST-NSTDA International Joint Laboratory of Intelligent Rehabilitation Engineering. The keynote forum on Technology Frontiers and Development of Rehabilitation Robotics was held on October 18, 2025, at University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST), the leading university for rehabilitation robotics in China.

Robotics AI students presented their works in 2025 SICE Festival with Annual Conference (SICE FES 2025), organized by the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers in Japan (SICE) in cooperation with the Electrical Engineering/Electronics, Computer, Telecommunications and Information Technology in Thailand (ECTI), during September 9 – 12, 2025, in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The session “Bridging Robotics Innovations between Japan and Thailand” was co-organized by Tohoku University (Asst. Prof. Jose Victorio Salazar Luces & Prof. Yasuhisa Hirata) and Chulalongkorn University (Assoc. Prof. Ronnapee Chaichaowarat). The paper entitled “Hand Gesture-Guided Robotic Manipulator for Handling Laparoscope During Minimally Invasive Surgery” was presented by Ms. Yada Suksawasdi, Ms. Tanyaton Oranrigsupak, and Mr. Norapath Arjanurak. This work was co-supervised by Assoc. Prof. Ronnapee Chaichaowarat, Ph.D. (ISE), Asst. Prof. Voranaddha Vacharathit, M.D., and Assoc. Prof. Sopark Manasnayakorn M.D., Ph.D. (Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University). The paper entitled “Real-time Computer Vision Feedback System for Golf Swing Posture Analysis Using Pose Estimation and LLMs” was presented by Mr. Suppakit Laomahamek, Mr. Trivit Chaiyaraks Worakulpisut, Ms. Chinnapat Chaimongkoltrakul, and Mr. Dissakorn Plubpla. This work was supervised by Assoc. Prof. Ronnapee Chaichaowarat, Ph.D. The paper entitled “Longer Context Vision-Language-Action Model Instructed UR Arm with Vacuum Gripper” was presented by Mr. Bhunakit Chantaraseno, Mr. Napat Saiyasitpanich, and Mr. Ratchapon Triruangworawat. This work was co-supervised by Dr. Jing Tang and Assoc. Prof. Ronnapee Chaichaowarat, Ph.D. Assoc. Prof. Ronnapee Chaichaowarat, Ph.D. also gave a talk entitled “Transformable Exoskeleton-Wheelchair Platform for Enhanced Mobility” at the JSAE-SICE Automotive Industry Special Event “Japan-Thailand Exchange in Automotive Industry”.
