The ISE Special Lecture on Robotics was honored to host Prof. Tomonari Furukawa as a distinguished guest speaker, presenting research findings from the VICTOR Laboratory on a broad range of topics.
On Tuesday, December 16, 2025, the ISE Special Lecture on Robotics was honored to host Prof. Tomonari Furukawa, Professor and Zinn Faculty Scholar at the University of Virginia, and Honorary Professor at Chulalongkorn University, as the distinguished guest speaker. Prof. Furukawa shared research findings from the VICTOR Laboratory covering a wide range of topics, including fully autonomous rescue robots, humanoid robots, aerial–ground robot collaboration, human front-following robots, state estimation under extreme acceleration, and his experiences leading teams in several renowned international competitions. These included Virginia Tech’s Team VALOR in the DARPA Robotics Challenge (2015) and Team VICTOR in the Mohamed Bin Zayed International Robotics Challenge (MBZIRC) in 2017 and 2020. The session was organized by Assoc. Prof. Ronnapee Chaichaowarat, Ph.D., at ISE Robotics Lab.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ronnapee Chaichaowarat demonstrated his invention, the “Wheelchair-Exoskeleton Hybrid Robot,” to Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. He also served as the Exhibition Co-Chair, Invited Keynote Speaker, and Session Chair for Biomechanics in Assistive Technology. Several ISE members presented their research papers at the conference: Mr. Nadol Pipattikanan (Robotics AI #1) presented his paper, “Real-time EMG-based assistive torque control on a powered elbow exoskeleton for weight-lifting support.” Mr. Phurin Liwcharoensakkul (ADME #4) presented his paper, “Electromagnetic brake with rotating field coil and armature for torque modulation under varying speed and load.” Mr. Thapanon Noochan (PMUC Researcher) presented his paper, “Climbing exoskeleton assisting shoulder extension during pull-up.” Mr. Sethapong Ketjit (ME Alumni) and Mr. Thanaphat Wachirakamchai (PMUC Researcher) presented their paper, “Development of dual force plate for real-time monitoring of ground reaction force during bridging exercise for rehabilitation.” All papers were supervised by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ronnapee Chaichaowarat.

Prof. Ronnapee Chaichaowarat, Ph.D., head of ISE Robotics Lab, was invited by University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) and the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) to give a keynote speech, entitled “Affordable Assistive Robotics: Solutions for ASEAN Countries”, in China-Thailand Forum on Intelligent Rehabilitation Technology and Industrial Development & Inauguration Ceremony of USST-NSTDA International Joint Laboratory of Intelligent Rehabilitation Engineering. The keynote forum on Technology Frontiers and Development of Rehabilitation Robotics was held on October 18, 2025, at University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST), the leading university for rehabilitation robotics in China.

Robotics AI students presented their works in 2025 SICE Festival with Annual Conference (SICE FES 2025), organized by the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers in Japan (SICE) in cooperation with the Electrical Engineering/Electronics, Computer, Telecommunications and Information Technology in Thailand (ECTI), during September 9 – 12, 2025, in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The session “Bridging Robotics Innovations between Japan and Thailand” was co-organized by Tohoku University (Asst. Prof. Jose Victorio Salazar Luces & Prof. Yasuhisa Hirata) and Chulalongkorn University (Assoc. Prof. Ronnapee Chaichaowarat). The paper entitled “Hand Gesture-Guided Robotic Manipulator for Handling Laparoscope During Minimally Invasive Surgery” was presented by Ms. Yada Suksawasdi, Ms. Tanyaton Oranrigsupak, and Mr. Norapath Arjanurak. This work was co-supervised by Assoc. Prof. Ronnapee Chaichaowarat, Ph.D. (ISE), Asst. Prof. Voranaddha Vacharathit, M.D., and Assoc. Prof. Sopark Manasnayakorn M.D., Ph.D. (Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University). The paper entitled “Real-time Computer Vision Feedback System for Golf Swing Posture Analysis Using Pose Estimation and LLMs” was presented by Mr. Suppakit Laomahamek, Mr. Trivit Chaiyaraks Worakulpisut, Ms. Chinnapat Chaimongkoltrakul, and Mr. Dissakorn Plubpla. This work was supervised by Assoc. Prof. Ronnapee Chaichaowarat, Ph.D. The paper entitled “Longer Context Vision-Language-Action Model Instructed UR Arm with Vacuum Gripper” was presented by Mr. Bhunakit Chantaraseno, Mr. Napat Saiyasitpanich, and Mr. Ratchapon Triruangworawat. This work was co-supervised by Dr. Jing Tang and Assoc. Prof. Ronnapee Chaichaowarat, Ph.D. Assoc. Prof. Ronnapee Chaichaowarat, Ph.D. also gave a talk entitled “Transformable Exoskeleton-Wheelchair Platform for Enhanced Mobility” at the JSAE-SICE Automotive Industry Special Event “Japan-Thailand Exchange in Automotive Industry”.

Nano-Engineering students presented their research at the NanoSeries2025 – 4th Edition Conference on Global Nanotechnology, held at the University of Valencia, Spain. We are delighted to announce that our Nano-Engineering students presented their research at the NanoSeries2025 – 4th Edition Conference on Global Nanotechnology, held at the University of Valencia, Spain, from June 17–20, 2025. The research, “Stability Enhancement of Paraffin-Based Rocket Fuel Grains Using Carbon Nanotube and Graphene Nanocomposites Blend,” was conducted by Chawalwat Martkamjan (4th year), Jiruntanin Ratanarangsank (4th year), Pitchayut Lertniratwong (4th year), and Somalinavann Thav (2nd year), under the supervision of Dr. Apipon Methachittipan (ISE). Representing their team, Chawalwat Martkamjan and Somalinavann Thav shared their research in the poster session among an international group of advanced researchers, an experience they described as both rewarding and enlightening. Aligned with NanoSeries2025’s mission to foster collaboration, bridge research with real-world applications, and highlight the value of diversity and inclusion in science, their participation reflects not only the technical quality of their work but also the growing global presence of our students in advancing nanotechnology for aerospace and energy applications.

Former ICE students have received the Top Paper Award at the 4th NIC-NIDA Conference 2025 for their exceptional senior project. Former ICE students Tiparpa Soongswang, Nuttayos Charukulvanich, and Burapa Chinwatanakit have received the Top Paper Award at the 4th NIC-NIDA Conference 2025 for their exceptional senior project, “Data-Driven Forecasting and Strategic Insights for the Growth of Thailand’s Medical Tourism.” Under the supervision of Dr. Aung Pyae, Lecturer in the Information and Communication Engineering (ICE) program at the International School of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, the team tackled critical challenges in data integration and decision-making within Thailand’s medical tourism sector. Their work resulted in the creation of a powerful predictive dashboard designed to support strategic planning and drive growth in the industry. This recognition underscores not only the students’ dedication and talent but also the importance of equipping engineering students with the skills to create data-driven solutions with real-world impact. The project is a testament to the ICE program’s commitment to developing graduates who can combine technical expertise with innovative thinking to address national and global challenges.
